Progressive education blends the best of the past with the discoveries of today. At SCL, students develop naturally – with opportunities for growth and self-expression in a rich environment of interesting material. Curiosity and passion motivate our student's learning every day. We see the teacher as your child’s guide, not as the taskmaster with all the answers.
Your child's progress is measured in overall individual development – considering physical, mental, character, and social growth. This includes time for exercise, wellness, and quality time in the outdoors. We're proud to partner with our families to provide a great learning experience both in and outside the traditional classroom.
Sustainability-based education is a response to the urgent and dramatic challenges the planet faces. How do we bring awareness to the next generation? On an average day at SCL, you might see middle school students researching ways to reduce waste in our oceans, second-graders pulling weeds in our gardens, and kindergartners exploring birds migration patterns through play.
Our students grow to understand their place in the world and the connections that link us all. Climate change and biodiversity are more than science lessons; they are ways to interpret and engage with the world. We partner with Shelburne Farms’ Sustainable Schools Program to shape future leaders and decision-makers through experiential learning.
Would you rather read a textbook on computer theory or build a robot? This is the beauty of our hands-on approach to learning, which encourages students to engage with the material in real-world, personally meaningful ways. Whether they are conducting experiments, working in the garden, or creating their own short stories, our students are able to demonstrate their academic skills through exploration and creation every day!
Through hands-on learning, our students develop critical thinking skills by actively engaging with the material and analyzing real-world problems and experience the importance of collaboration as they work together to solve complex challenges. Our approach to learning fosters creativity as students are encouraged to think outside of the box and develop unique solutions to problems.
Families are busy, and our students love school life. We extend the love by offering our families a before and after care program in the morning from 8 to 8:45, and in the afternoon from 4 to 5:45. You can trust that your child is safe, busy, and making friends while you're at work.
Partnerships with Butler School of Music, Earth Charter Indiana, Second Helpings, and other organizations connect students to our community. We arrange for storytellers, artists, doctors, and actors to come in to teach lessons or mini-courses to our middle school students.
Well-rounded education includes opportunities to explore interests and discover talents. Our current after-school clubs are robotics, writing, and music. We arrange regular field trips to broaden our horizons outside the classroom.
